Host Family Letter

Dear future host family,

My name is Hannah Döscher, I’m an 18-year-old student from Germany and hopefully soon your Au Pair! I live close to the sea in a small city in the north, called Cuxhaven where it is often stormy and rainy but if you get the chance to catch some sunshine, our coast is probably one of the loveliest places in Germany.
For me, the most important thing in life is my family, consisting of my parents Ute and Ingo and my 20-year-old sister Lisa. She is currently studying French and Business Administration in southern Germany, so she lives on her own, but we are still in close contact to each other. My friends are also pretty important to me, because they always support me and make me laugh when we cook together or just sit in a café, drinking coffee after school to relax.
Next spring I will pass my A-Levels, therefore school takes a lot of time at the moment but in my leisure time I love to do modern dance, to be outside and take photos or to read. Music plays a decisive role in my life, too. I play the bass guitar in our school band and I learned the flute for many years, so I would like to support your children learning an instrument or anyway learning for school because I am used to give private coaching in my free time. Furthermore, I’m a passionate baker and pastry cook. Even if it sounds weird it has an absolutely relaxing effect on me.
My job as waitress taught me to be patient, polite and natural in every situation. Apart from that, I would consider myself as a humorous, creative, open-minded and reliable person, but you should rather form an opinion about me yourself!
I passed my driver’s license in October 2011 and possess a car of my own, therefore I drive regularly and safely what might be important for you. If you want, I can do some light housework, for example preparing meals for the children, doing the laundry or doing the grocery shopping if necessary, because I’m used to do it at home.
Now I will tell you something about my childcare experience. I did an internship in a kindergarten for three weeks with children and toddlers aged 2 to 6, what I really enjoyed and what helped me to be able to look after more than two children at the same time. There I gained valuable experience with different personalities. Due to the fact that we live on a farm, I often show (nursery) classes or other groups round the stables and buildings and explain my parents’ job and how a farm works. Even if I thus have a way with animals, I prefer them to be outside and not in the house. Furthermore, I frequently babysit the two lovely children Annalen, 5 years old, and Ben, 2 years old, what delivers me a good insight in two completely different family lives where I “have” to fit in.
The main reason why I want to become an Au Pair is that I love the lightheartedness und unlimited imagination of children. They are still so pure, that’s what makes them so adorable and I am happy to give them good advice for the future, to accompany and support them on their way and to see them growing up. I love their sparkling eyes when they are fascinated, therefore it is worth being stressed sometimes. Other reasons to go to the United States are to broaden my horizon, to get to know another culture, to improve my English skills and of course to make new friends and get a second family. I wish you, my host family, not to be only my employers but also to support me somehow, so we can have a mutual cultural exchange and a great time together.

Thank you very much for reading my letter, I hope that you enjoyed it and that I will hear from you soon!

Warm regards,
Hannah
